These things are money!!! Only problem was that it was a little sad looking and didn't even work!! Haha! I figured it just needed a new light bulb, but turns out it was an electrical issue! Some how Husband was able to figure it out and got it working again! He also took the table apart and sanded the whole thing down for me! If that's not love, I don't know what is! Haha! I planned on painting the whole thing... grey of course... but ended up loving the natural wood look so much, that we just left it! I love it soooooo much!! Hopefully the girl loves it as much as I do!

I set out the loose parts and the girl went to town creating a few compositions! Not sure why there are those funny lines on my pics, but anyways!
She has also been asking non-stop to make "a rainbow egg recipe"! What on Earth are rainbow eggs? Well after much questioning, I have concluded they are not dyed Easter eggs. I still have no idea what she's talking about, but decided to indulge her anyways. We took my tried and true Chinese egg tart recipe and turned it rainbow! This recipe is so super easy and always a crowd pleaser!

Mix 1 egg, 1/4 sugar and 3/4 cream or milk. Pour into frozen dessert tarts. Bake for 35mins at 325C.

See!! So super simple!! This recipe will make 10 tarts! I usually add a couple drops of yellow food coloring to give it some color! So this time we added various colors and made it rainbow!! Hopefully the girl is satisfied with this "rainbow egg recipe"!!
We painted it grey (of course) when we first got it! Somehow it got a big crack in one of the seats... I'm thinking an adult or big kid may have stood on it. So note to self, don't stand on it if you have one! It was totally still useable just a big eyesore! Anyways, what I'm getting at is that I finally addressed the problem! Yay me!

First I duct taped the crack on both sides... hahah problem solved!! Then I used an exacto knife and "beveled" (aka shaved off) the entire edge of the seat.

Next I added a little batting and leftover fabric and "upholstered" the seat, securing it with duct tape!! Haha soooooo ghetto! Then I slid the whole thing back together and voila, Yules now has cute upholstered chairs (just don't look at the bottom haha)!!!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Yulli made this lovely portrait for her dad! It took us a little while but I think it looks great! We spent lots of time talking about the different colours and shapes in his face. I helped her draw the shapes and she cut and glued them.

We also did our annual questionnaire!

<span style="font-family: "verdana";">You get 3 kids who chose on their own to go and sit down to create something. You get 3 kids who created 3 different things on their own. You get a drawing of a butterfly. You get a mixed-media collage for his dad. And you get an architectural drawing of a playground! SERIOUSLY... this makes my heart so happy!!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">

<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Ditch the crafts and the instructions and the expectations and they will surprise you with THIS!! KalbsandYuleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12125187634865890390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-873889326801679925.post-32257645452142439432016-06-13T00:10:00.002-07:002016-06-13T00:15:00.206-07:00Happy Sunday!<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Here's 6 random things that are making my heart happy this Sunday:
Although we have a blast, they usually turn out less then stellar! Haha! Our latest creations were from a paint night and attempts at making terrariums!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Even though these paintings don't look that shabby, they are a far cry from the inspiration painting! Hah! I do appreciate that we were able to choose our own colours and that they all look so different and "unique"! I've since dibble dabbled at my masterpiece... attempting to make it better but it's a lost cause! My painting is currently hanging in the powder room, but probably not for long!

<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">We also attempted to make terrariums with no direction or expertise and only the guidance of Pinterest! We made a billion of them and they are ALL "special-looking"! Haha! Even though they aren't as beautiful and Pinterest-worthy as we had hoped, it was definitely super fun and relaxing! Oh wait... maybe that was from the wine? Haha! Anyways, here's a few of the different ones we made! Hopefully they survive our brown thumb of death!
The one that has been calling out for artwork for the last 4 years? Well I am happy to report that we FINALLY put up a piece of art! I was able to score a GIGANTIC painting in the right color-scheme, with a frame AND on clearance!! Ummm... that's seriously equivalent to winning the lottery or finding a unicorn!! YAY us! Only took 4 years but whatevs! Worth the wait for sure!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Well actually, it sat leaning against the wall for a good few weeks and then we finally got around to hanging it up. I actually really liked it leaned against the wall... apparently leaned art and mirrors is super trendy now! Haha or is it only trendy to super lazy people like me?
Someone commented on Yulli's cutting skills the other day, which lead into a whole convo about scissors... so naturally here is a whole post on scissors!!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">If you really break it down, using scissors is super hard! You need hand strength, wrist stabilization, hand-eye, fine motor and bilateral coordination etc. etc. Yikes!! There is no better way to develop scissor cutting skills then exposure and opportunities to practice. Yulli started using scissors when she was 2 years old because she showed interest in it. Obviously every kid is different and I don't think they fully develop the skill until they are 6 years old. No need to push it or freak out but definitely give them lots of opportunities to try. You'll know whether or not your kid can handle it or not. It's important to set some ground rules like "stay sitting while cutting" and "cut paper only", and to constantly remind them of the rules. We've only had one hair cutting incident so far (knock on wood) Haha. Just keep an eye on them and they should be fine... or they might give themselves a fancy new haircut lol!!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Keep in mind that not all scissors are created equally! There is nothing worst than giving kids dull scissors just because you think they are "safer". Ughhh can you imagine how frustrating it would be and how much harder it would be to use dull scissors that don't cut properly and just kind of folds the paper. I would get discouraged quickly, so imagine how a child just starting to learn to cut would feel!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Yulli has a whole whack of scissors... all different types! Haha I bet you probably didn't know there were so many different types of scissors for kids. I always like to give her choice and exposure to different types so she can decide what she wants to use. Here are some of the different ones that we like and some things to take into consideration.!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">

<span style="font-family: "verdana";">The most<span style="font-family: "verdana";"> popular type is probably the blue pair... with one small hole for the thumb and a bigger hole for the other fingers. I think these are called fiskar scissors... or is that just a brand? Or both? Anyways, notice in contrast, the pink pair has 2 holes that are the same size.

<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Another thing to take into consideration is type of tip. The blunt rounded tip is probably safest and best for little kids. When they're more advanced and can handle it, give them sharper tips for better precision or delicate cutting.

I also really liked the spring scissors for beginners. You just push that little yellow lever down and it helps the scissors automatically spring back open with each squeeze. These are perfect for when they are just learning and/or have limited hand strength and co-ordination.
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">This green pair is my favourite! It is also a spring scissor but notice it has no holes. You just squeeze it together to cut and it will spring back open. So super easy to use and super great for beginners! It also has a lovely case and is nice and compact. I actually bring this one with me when we eat out at restaurants. It's perfect for cutting up her food! We gave her auntie who had braces a pair because she often found it difficult to chew. Her great-grandmother, who has no real teeth also has a pair too! Haha best scissors ever!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">This super cute heart shaped one is also a spring scissor with no holes but also no lever either. It's really easy to use; just squeeze! Can it BE any cuter?

<span style="font-family: "verdana";">

<span style="font-family: "verdana";">So there you have it, lots of different scissors!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Some other tips I have for you are:
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">-Remind them to point their thumb up since there is a tendency to turn their wrists for some reason. You can draw a happy face on their thumb nail as a reminder or even put a sticker on there if it helps.
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">-Start with thicker paper like construction paper or cardstock which is easier for them to hold because it's less flimsy.
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">-Give them narrow strips of paper to start because they can cut right through with one snip.
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">-Lots of people advise to draw little straight lines for them to practice cutting on and then advancing to curvy lines and then shapes. But no lines and no real "objective" is best in my opinion. Just giving them a chance to practice and have fun is best. If you give them a line to cut and they can't do it or it's not perfect, it can totally be discouraging. I think kids will naturally be attracted to cutting on lines but it's better if there's no actual pressure to. I remember giving Yules some paint chip cards that have lines that divide the different shades. She was playing with them one day and decided on her own to cut on those lines. Cutting on lines will come naturally, so no need to fret!

Ok that's all I think! Happy cutting!!
It's just a standard cardboard box boat, but the oars I jigged up are pretty awesome and maybe borderline genius! Well I think so at least!! I simply used wrapping paper tubes, cut some slits and inserted another piece of cardboard! Sometimes the simplest designs are the best!!! Now the monster can go on boating adventures all she wants!
Dare I say that Spring is on it's way here?
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">We built a snowman! For peeps that don't typically get snow, there's a little bit of a science involved. People assume there's snow so you can build a snowman anytime you want! WRONG! First of all you need to wait till there's enough snow, then you need to wait till it's the perfect temperature. A nice, warm, sunny, winter day just below freezing is perfect in my opinion. The snow can't be too wet and heavy or soft and powdery! The snow needs to be able to pack together well. Anyways, we kinda missed the mark on the perfect snowman making conditions this year, so our snowman is a sad little one that didn't stick around for very long! His accessories make him way less sad looking then he really is! lol

So we read books about igloos, looked up pictures on the internet and learned that humans live in igloos!!

Yules painted an igloo and wrote the word igloo by herself!

We tried to build an igloo outside but we're kinda lacking in the snow department this year... so it's a bit of a sad igloo! haha

We built igloos out of legos and blocks and magnatiles and magnaformers and pretty much anything we could build with! Mine is on the left and Yulli's is on the right!
But it was definitely time for the last of the Christmas decorations to be put away and a few Springy touches around the house. I slightly updated our DIY Christmas center piece and made it Springy!
Yules has been making lots of bubble tea lately! Beware though, her pricing is very inconsistent and can often be very expensive for one tiny cup!!
Yules wanted me to show her how to draw a crown, so I did. She wanted to color it rainbow and add jewels. We used this nifty spinner to decide how many jewels to add and she picked and counted them out. Then she wrote the number 5 on top. Super easy way to add some numeracy to our activity.

The monster also wanted to make a crown to wear, so we measured, cut and assembled it together. She wanted "pointy spikes", so I helped her cut out the "triangles", while pointing out the shape and proper name. Again, super easy to inject some math into our activity.

Here's another special crown that she made by taping on some colorful feathers. Haha I just noticed that we must do "crafts" a lot after gymnastics, hence the special outfits!

And here is a drawing of herself as a princess wearing a crown and probably wearing gymnastics clothes! Lol
Haha! But I do think posts like this are important because it is a good reminder to be more cognisant when we are interacting with our kids! Ask yourself what is the goal of the activity? Do you want to teach your kid something specific like Igloos are made out of snow? Or do you want them to practice cutting on the line? Or do you want them to simple just have fun? Having fun can totally be the goal! Either way, thinking about it leads to more meaningful and purposeful experiences for your little monsters!***
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Okay so here it is: The very reason for my rant! This lovely craft that Yulli made at school!

<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">I could hear the other parents ooing and ahhing about how cute it was! I did not ooo or ahh. I did not think it was cute or lovely. I was actually borderline super annoyed with it actually! Surprisingly, I am not a big fan when it comes to crafts for kids. But I don't mind when Yulli comes home from school or classes with crafts. I figure we rarely do any at home, so exposure is good and if she's having fun, then no biggie. I'm not sure why I cared so much or why it bothered me... but it did! Big time! Haha!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Number 1. Why on earth does it have "Marshmallow Igloo" written on it? Does the teacher think I'm an idiot that wouldn't be able to figure out what the heck it was? Or does she think Yulli will forget what she made? Either way... grrr! At the very least, the kids could have attempted to write "igloo" by themselves.
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Number 2. I asked the monster about it. She said that igloos were made out of marshmallows and that penguins lived in them. Grrrr... and why doesn't blogger have emoticons? Or does it and I'm just not smart. Anyways... igloos are not made out of marshmallows and no, they are not a home for penguins!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Number 3. Yulli did not obviously write the words. She also did not cut out the igloo and glue it on. So what the heck did she do? She just glued the marshmallows on! I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there was probably no fine motor focus like using a pincher grasp to put the marshmallows on or placing one marshmallow on each block.
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Number 4. Was it at least fun? Did you enjoy this craft Yulli? "No, we didn't even get to eat any marshmallows!" Haha oh the injustice of giving kids marshmallows but not even letting them eat any! I feel her pain!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">So there you have it! This cute little craft (that I obviously don't even think is really cute) served zero purpose what so ever. At least it is a step up from an igloo coloring sheet! (You don't even want to get me started about coloring sheets ahaha! I'll save that for a rainy day.) If Yulli brought this craft home with her own attempt at writing igloo at the top, I would not have been annoyed. If she cut out the igloo and glued it on herself, I would not have been annoyed. If she learned that igloos are made out of snow and are human homes, I would not have been annoyed. If she thought it was fun, I totally wouldn't have been annoyed! Grrrrr...
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">I may be a little anti-craft to start off with, but I do think there is a time and place for them. I'd much rather Yulli bring home something super hideous that she created all by herself. Teachers and parents really need to step away from wasting so much precious time prepping crafts. I already know you can cut and write and color! I want my kid to practice all those things! Those efforts are definitely not appreciated (by me at least) and aren't doing the kids any favours.
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">Ok END RANT!!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
Most of the time her creations are very "abstract", which is cool but occasionally she surprises me!
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">This is a whale she cut, colored and created all by herself. I guess that whale watching trip during the summer (where husband almost died) was well worth it! Lol #oopsforgotthegravol
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">This one is a chicken! I'm not sure if she cut and glued a bunch of paper and decided it looked like a chicken or if that was her original intent. Either way, it's not too shabby of a chicken! Husband helped her add some chicken feet afterwards.
I had some left over so I decided to throw some in a pot and make a quick and easy Christmas arrangement. The little monster wanted to help so I thought, why not let her make her own. I threw some in her sensory table and let her go to town! Mmmmm nothing beats fresh pine scent!
Sounds like a jolly ol' time or some serious Pinterest fails in the making! Haha!

I had a couple gals over for an evening of wine and crafts. Most of which were more interested in wine than crafts, so I picked a pretty simple craft. So simple in fact that the next day the little monster made some as well... resulting in the same caliber end product. Which means this craft is pretty much suitable for anyone and any skill level!

We made some lovely snowflake ornaments out of wooden clothespins. Simple twist to take apart and glue them back together to form a snowflake and paint. We tied on some twine to hang as ornaments or they could be cute gift tags or even cute coasters.

And what's wine and crafts without munchies...
